Admin's Blues

by GT <gt@dreamsmith.org>

There's trouble in the conf files,
I can feel it my bones.
I had a premonition,
That it would not serve those zones.

I knew the files were buggy,
    But I didn't think it'd crash.
DNS stopped running
And to work I have to dash.

So baby, here's the tickets,
See the movie as we planned.
Here's a little money now,
    I can't go or I'll be canned.
I may work each day 12 hours
But they pay me sixty grand.

I'm sorry it went down like that,
I wish I had some clues,
It's the nature of the business,
    It's the admin's blues.

    Admin's blues...

Apache and the vhosts,
    Bind and SQL,
The webmail isn't working,
And the logs are shot to Hell.

No matter if it's PHP,
    Perl or bash,
You've got to be dynamic,
Or they don't pay you the cash.

There's lots of shady coding,
    And lots of patches too.
Ev'ry one is different,
    And there's always something new.
It's the lure of featuritis,
    But cgi-bin's now a zoo.

Perhaps you'd understand it better
    Standin' in my shoes,
It's the ultimate enticement,
    It's the admin's blues.

    Admin's blues...

You see it up on Slashdot,
And you here it ev'ry day.
Another site's been cracked,
    All its files blown away.

Misconfiguration, yeah,
Why was it done that way?
That program's default password
It was never meant to stay.

The constant stream from BugTraq,
    Companies you cannot sue.
You ask any sysadmin,
He'll say "There's nothin' we can do."
You patch every bug announced and hope,
Then they find a hole and slip right through.

It's a losing proposition,
    But one you can't refuse.
It's the game of site security,
    It's the admin's blues.
