Qtarot
Qtarot is a free
Tarot reading/teaching tool for Linux (and will probably compile and run
fine under other Unix family operating systems too). It is available under
the terms of the GNU General
Public License. In order to run, you must also have the Qt toolkit
installed, which is also now available under the GPL. Qtarot does
not require KDE (personally, I use WindowMaker), but it does
require Qt.
This is the version 0.25 release (so called because I estimate it to be
25% of the way towards a 1.0 release). Click the picture for screenshots.
Some things work, some things don't, and there's no documentation to be
found anywhere. Hopefully, the situation will improve in the future...
New with version 0.25: In addition to fixing bugs and improving
the handling of HTML files, this release comes with two new decks! The
Rider-Waite deck (which I technically never had permission to distribute)
has been replaced by the Aquatic Tarot, a beautiful
watercolor rendition of the A.E. Waite/Pamela Colman Smith deck. Also, the
Silicon Valley Tarot is now included!
Many thanks to Andreas Schröter and Thomas Scoville for allowing me to
include their decks with my program. Also, full descriptions of each card
are now available thanks to Samvado Gunnar Kossatz and the Colman-Smith Tarot
project.
NOTE: Some people have reported problems compiling the program recently.
This is usually related to the combination of GCC and Qt being used. If
you are having trouble compiling from source, and your distribution recently
upgraded to some version of GCC >= 3.0, try installing an older GCC (e.g.
2.95). Most distributions can have two different GCC's installed without
problem. Then add "GCC = gcc-2.95" and "GXX = g++-2.95" to the top of the
Makefile. This fixed the problem for me (under Debian/unstable).
qtarot-source.tar.gz: This is the
source code. Downloading this is recommended. Don't forget to also grab
tarot.tar.gz if you don't already have it! It
won't do much without it...

qtarot-binary.tar.gz: This is a
precompiled binary, compiled under Debian GNU/Linux unstable (sid) i386 on
2001-05-17. The executable is provided as a convenience for those who don't
have the Qt development header files installed and don't want to bother
installing them and compiling the program themselves. You don't need this
if you download the source, just "make" it yourself!

tarot.tar.gz: This contains the "tarot"
directory that must be located in your home directory when you run
qtarot. It contains two decks, several cloths (backgrounds), and other
assorted goodies. Warning: this file is BIG (over 6MB).

If you would like to help out with this project, please feel free! I
really need good descriptions of each card in HTML format with the image
included. Better descriptions of spread positions with a picture would be
nice too. More spreads would be nice. Another deck or two would be nice.
Then there are the ensembles. These are supposed to be deck/spread
combinations where they'll be an HTML file describing each card in each
position. That'll be a project in and of itself.
And of course, code improvements are always welcome.
